Covid – 19
Covid-19 is our designation for the Novel Corona Virus 2019. The word “corona” has become a word of fear, illness, death, separation, isolation, etc. The human Corona virus was first identified in the the 1960s. SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) and MERS (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome) are recent human corona virus diseases. Today’s watchword is Covid-19.
I believe we need to remind ourselves that the meaning of Corona is Crown! As found in Webster’s Dictionary: Corona – (1)”the projecting part of a classic cornice”, (2) “something suggesting a crown”, (3) “a usually colored circle often seen around and close to a luminous body, such as the sun” {seen during total solar eclipse}. Coronation – “the act or occasion of crowning”. And, of course, Webster can even tell us what a crown is: Crown –“(1) A reward of victory or mark of honor”, (2) A royal or imperial headdress or cap of sovereignty: Diadem”
The corona virus is thus named because of the crown-like appearance of the surface projections. Similar to the solar corona seen during a complete solar eclipse! When we think of crowns we think of kings and queens i.e. sovereigns. Or even a crown (wreath) of victory in the original Olympics.
I would like to direct our attention to Jesus. Crown Him LORD of all. Jesus wore a crown of thorns so that I would be able to wear the crown of redemptive victory.
“They cast their crowns before the throne, saying, “Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power.” Revelation 4:10-11.
The Bible speaks about a “crown of righteousness” the the Lord will give (2 Timothy 4:8 “Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing.”)
At the end of the New Testament, Jesus Christ is revealed as the “King of kings and the Lord of lords” (Revelation 19:16, and we are told that “on his head are many crowns” (Revelation 19:12).
So through God’s kindness, there are crowns for God’s people. But what will they do with these crowns? We will say, “I am not the one who should be wearing this crown! The only righteousness I have came from You. Jesus is the Good Shepherd, and through all of my life I am completely dependent on Him. The reason I am here in heaven is not that I laid down my life for Jesus, but that Jesus laid down His life for me. I place this crown on the head of King Jesus!”
Picture all the redeemed, a vast crowd that no one can number, gathered together in the presence of the Savior. Not a single one of them has a crown on his or her head. Why? Because all their crowns have been placed at the feet of King Jesus.
“Crown him with many crowns, the Lamb upon his throne’
Hark, how the heavenly anthem drowns all music but it own!
Awake, my soul and sing of Him who died for me,
And hail Him as thy matchless King through all eternity.”
Corona – a virus with a surface suggesting a crown that is unusually virulent.
Corona – a crown as we have seen on Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth.
Corona – A Crown on the head of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, when the universe will “Crown Him Lord of all” and the saved will cast their crowns at the feet of Jesus saying: “You are worthy, O Lord, To receive glory and honor and power; For You created all things, And by Your will they exist and were created.” Revelation 4:10-11.
